Photographer Shayna Harrison
Shayna Harrison is a photographer based in Idaho Falls. She started finding her interest in photography in high school, discovering a love for beautiful landscapes. It wasn’t until her son was born in 2007 that she bought her first DSLR and began her journey as a professional photographer, learning everything she could. She currently uses a Nikon D7000 and shoots most all of her portraits with a 50mm 1.8.
What is your favorite genre to shoot? (portrait, family, nature, wedding, etc.)
I love to shoot high school seniors. They are definitely my favorite because they are so excited for graduation and everything that comes after it! They are so fun to work with. Aside from people, I love to shoot landscapes, and my favorite place to do that is in Grand Teton National Park.
What is the piece of equipment you use most (other than your actual camera)?
It’s a tie between my tripod and my 5-in-1 reflector. Tripods are essential in landscape photography, and the reflector is an amazing little lighting tool to have handy, especially for portraits!
What do you like the most about being a photographer? The least?
My favorite thing is that I can show people how I see something, especially with landscapes. So many people don’t have the chance to live in a beautiful place like Idaho, so I like that I can share pieces of it with people all over.
The thing I like the least is probably marketing. It’s hard!
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in photography?
Don’t compare yourself to other photographers! There is always going to be someone that blows you away and makes you feel like your pictures are less than amazing. They started out at the bottom just like everyone else. Focus on improving YOUR skills and knowledge and forget about everyone else.
